Communication for Goal Directed Agents

This paper dis usses some modeling issues on erning the ommuni ation between goal-dire ted agents. In parti ular, the role of performatives in agent ommuni ation is dis ussed. It is argued that the spe i ation of the e e t of performatives, as pres ribed by FIPA, is sometimes too weak or unrealisti . The alternative, proposed in this paper, suggests a two phase modeling of the e e t of the ommuniation. A minimum e e t an be hardwired in the semanti s of sending and re eiving messages. And the performative related part is a hieved by exe uting a number of rules whi h are under the ontrol of the agent and made a essible to the agent programmer. These issues are dis ussed in the ontext of 3APL whi h is a goal dire ted agent programming language.
